A VISION REALIZED
"My desire to create a collection of carved stone patterns evolved through my need for this product in my design work. Often specifying custom carved and textured stone for my projects, I realized there was a real lack of options in the market. But, as often happens in life, we ask and we receive. Through a series of serendipitous connections, I was presented with this opportunity to collaborate with ABC and Borrowed Earth. A flood of designs and patterns filled my mind, and as we worked together, the product naturally and organically took shape."

A LANDMARK MOMENT
We were already in development when we received the thrilling news that Sergio Mercado had been selected to participate in the 2023 Kips Bay Decorators Showhouse. This prestigious event, known for transforming luxury Manhattan homes into exhibitions of fine furnishings, art, and technology, accelerated our creative process. Located at the historic River Mansion on the Upper West Side, this iconic building offered the perfect backdrop to showcase Astradia.

THE CREATIVE PROCESS
The design for the wall cladding in Astradia began with a simple yet innovative idea: using a random cracking pattern to break away from conventional norms of beauty like rhythm and harmony, creating a contemporary and fresh aesthetic. This concept draws from textural materials, contemporary lines, soft palettes, and a refined industrial style.
- First Option: The lines of the pattern are converted into fluting, reminiscent of random rubble masonry.
- Second Option: Textures are applied over random shapes, giving a more abraded and raw appearance.
- Third Option: Random shapes are manipulated to create varying levels, adding depth and dimensionality.
